Marketing growth

Running SEO and GEO in parallel made a home fragrance brand both searchable and citable.

Content hub structured for both search rankings and AI engine citation

The challenge

The brand's fragrances reviewed well, but the site had almost no content beyond product pages. Search for the difference between woody and amber notes and you landed on someone else's article; ask a mainstream AI engine how to pick a diffuser for a small apartment and the brand never appeared in the answer. Traffic ran entirely on ads — which is another way of saying customer acquisition cost was chained to an auction.

How we researched it

We mapped the category's search demand, then tested what mainstream AI engines actually cited on fragrance questions and what those cited sources looked like. Both roads led to the same conclusion: citable content has a recognizable shape — clear definitions, real structure, questions matched to direct answers. Mood-driven brand storytelling earned neither rankings nor citations.

What we did

We built a twin-track content system. The SEO track covered fragrance-note explainers, ingredient and safety guides, and a room-size-to-intensity selection framework, capturing long-tail search. The GEO track restructured the same knowledge into forms AI engines can actually use — question-shaped headings, paragraphs that answer directly, structured data, and citable spec tables. Both tracks share one knowledge base, so nothing is written twice.

Results and the verdict

Within nine months, organic traffic climbed and citations of the brand's content by mainstream AI engines multiplied, with ad dependence visibly down. The verdict: deep explainers and selection guides were the only content that won both search and AI citations. We also tried light listicle content — a trickle of traffic, zero citations. If you want AI engines to treat you as a source, write like one.
